Solvang, CA, was the first true stop on my West Coast journey. I had already spent a few nights in the van, settling into the rhythm of vanlife, but this was my first real travel day. Hitting the road, I quickly spotted another van with some unique modifications—my first fellow build on the journey. Little did I know how many more I’d see along the way.

Rolling Into Solvang
My route took me along some stunning coastal viewpoints, where I pulled over to take in the bluffside views of the ocean. The timing was perfect—I even caught a train passing by, adding to the moment.

I rolled into Solvang just after sunset, greeted by charming streets still decorated for Halloween. The historic buildings looked even more whimsical with their festive touches. Parking was my first challenge, but I found a spot using an app and tested out my stealth camping plan: shades up, curtain drawn, a quick exit, and straight into town.

Exploring the Town
Solvang is a tourist’s dream, packed with little souvenir shops, cozy restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, and adorable hotels. I strolled through town, soaking in the ambiance and ducked into the local bookstore just before closing. Inside, I found the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, showcasing artifacts from the famous Danish storyteller—fitting for this European-style town.

For dinner, I landed at Fitzpatrick’s Tavern, where I indulged in a hearty shepherd’s pie and a wine-based cocktail—a creative workaround since many spots in town don’t serve hard liquor. If you’re looking for a different vibe, High Roller Tiki Lounge offers tiki-themed drinks in a unique setting. I didn’t get a chance to visit, but it’s on my list for next time!
After dinner, I wandered past a haunted tour group, adding a mysterious touch to the night. Looking for a nightcap, I stumbled upon Vaquero Bar, a lively spot tucked inside a larger restaurant. This was the place to be—great music, fun people, and one of the few places serving actual mixed drinks.

Vanlife in Solvang
After a cozy night in the van, I woke up early and even washed my hair in the van—a new experience but a successful one. By 8 AM, I was back in town, enjoying the peaceful morning streets before the crowds arrived.
Breakfast at Paula’s Pancake House was a must. The line was already long, but solo travelers take note—seating at the counter had no wait. Danish pancakes and sausage hit the spot, and sitting up front at the counter gave me a perfect view of the action. Checking out some of many local Danish bakeries was next up.

Before leaving town, I browsed a few more shops, including The Mole Hole, a store that reminded me of my hometown—one of those small moments of nostalgia that make travel special.
